My experiences here in the German working world confirm John's critique too: what bewilders me here is how the famed "direct" German attitude, with nobody apparently knowing how to tiptoe carefully around a subject, gets abandoned wholesale at the door of the place of work and avoidance, compliance and putting up AND shutting up are the order of the day until hometime. I wonder how they think progress happens if questioning and "whistleblowing", or "upsetting the apple cart" a little are a no go. All part and parcel of a healthy modern world, wouldn't you say?

Roger, I think you put your finger on the one of the fundamental problems in German society. This attitude also pervades corporate culture. One of the worst insults in Germany is to be called a "Nestbeschmutzer", a whistle-blower. Germany needs more, not less whistle blowing.
